Abstract

Affixation is a morphological process in English lexicology, which is the main way to build up the lexicon by attaching bound morphemes to base forms. This paper looks at how prefixes and suffixes interact to form new units of semantics and grammar with particular reference to functional roles. Though the laws of affixation are generally well-recorded, the comparative study of the productivity of particular affixes in the various linguistic systems, and their contribution to contemporary phraseological construction is conspicuously lacking. This study fills this gap by applying a qualitative comparative approach to the study of word-formation patterns, classifying affixes in accordance with their functional characteristics, and assessing their frequency in modern linguistic corpora. The results reveal that suffixes are the main means of categorical shifts, and prefixes are those that add semantic color to the word without changing the part of speech. Moreover, it is seen that there is a cross-linguistic inclination towards suffixation rather than prefixation in various language families. The findings affirm that affixation is an extremely systematic and predictable force behind lexical expansion, which guarantees the constant expansion of the mental lexicon. The insights have a critical role in the creation of morphological analysis tools within computational linguistics and serve as a systematic guide to the enhancement of vocabulary acquisition within academic language training, with morphological awareness becoming a strategic concern of modern linguistics.
